What is Reiki?
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy"
Reiki is one of the more widely known forms of energy healing. Energy Healing involves direct application of Chi for the purpose of strengthening the clients energy system (aura). Chi is the term used by the Chinese mystics and martial artists for the underlying force the Universe is made of. Mystics in all cultures have talked about the physical universe being made of an underlying form of something, much as modern physics research is now coming to understand the Universe is made of energy which is subject to (or affected by) thought. Just as modern physics says this energy is affected by thought the mystics also say this underlying form is affected by thought, going so far as to claim we create our own reality from our thinking and the thoughts we share between each of us every day
Reiki History
Reiki is believed to be developed and established in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui. He discovered Reiki and single-handedly created a movement to support it. He was able to create a large group of followers, making his system popular around the world. He was succeeded by other presidents who have continued the practice and teachings of Reiki after his death. Dr. Mikao Usui was referred to as Usui Sensei by his students. His Reiki system, called the Usui Reiki, was founded after he attended Isyu Guo, a 21-day training course of meditation
Dr. Usui went to the high-energy areas of Mt. Kurama to meditate, fast, pray, and chant. Incidentally, the holy mountain had a waterfall where he would stand and allow water to flow over his head. It is said that this successfully activated his crown chakra.
After twenty one days of training at Mt. Kurama, Dr. Usui received the power of Reiki - a gift that allowed him to heal himself and others without using any of his own energy.
There are some speculations that Reiki might have originated from either Buddhist or Tibetan healing practices. However, no distinct relations have yet been found to prove this. Reiki masters believe that Reiki is neutral in its form and can exist independent of any religions and affiliations. Right now, the concept of Reiki had spread in the West, as well as all over the world. More and more people are experiencing the goodness that Reiki can bring in terms of freeing the spirit and getting in touch with the soul

The Three Degrees of Reiki Training
Reiki is the ancient art of healing through the use of energy. Reiki can be learned, practiced, and taught in different degrees. Generally, this movement is divided into three major categories, with each one in a higher level than the other.
The major divisions of Reiki training are simply referred to as first, second, and third degree Reiki levels
Reiki 1
First Degree Reiki
The Reiki first degree (Reiki 1) is usually considered as a stage during which the healer heals their self and practices at healing other people – usually friends and family. Reiki first degree is focused on teaching a student everything they have to know about the art of Reiki. Here, you will be taught what Reiki really means and what it can do for you. It is the time where masters will give their students an in-depth description about the Reiki. This includes where it came from, how to give it, and the proper way of using it. After all the concepts are taught as well as the mental, emotional, and physical natures of the student are thoroughly prepared, hands-on practice will take place. The Reiki 1 healer should not charge money for their healing of others and should not advertise their healing service. The Reiki 1 practitioner learns to channel the Reiki healing energies in an efficient way and I feel that at this stage most initiates will be on a journey of self discovery. I feel that self healing is a continuous process that merges with spiritual practice
Upon completion of the first degree , a student will know how to use the Reiki energy for self-healing. This same energy can also be channeled to help other people, more specifically their friends and family. First degree Reiki can also stimulate personal and spiritual growth in a person
Just having the attunement will open people to Divine energies whether or not they consciously use the energies for healing. Some of those who have had the Reiki 1 attunement may stop using it after a short while and others may continue to use it and progress to further levels
Reiki 2
Second Degree Reiki
At Reiki second degree (Reiki 2) the initiate receives another attunement which considerably increases the power of their healing. Reiki 2 healers may advertise as a Reiki healer and charge for this service if they so wish. The Reiki 2 healer is given much more versatility in their healing; it may be sent to anywhere and into the past and the future and initiates learn to use Reiki in every aspect of their lives and learn to use sacred Reiki symbols in their healing. I would like the Reiki 2 initiate to show that they have practiced healing on friends and family and have embraced the Reiki healing system and energies. I also require that initiates have attained a reasonable degree of spiritual insight and intend that their love and compassion is used to bring healing to others.Second degree Reiki leads you to the deeper understanding of the ancient method of Reiki Healing
During the second level of Reiki training, the flow of Reiki energy within you intensifies. You can further enhance your abilities through the use of the great Reiki symbols bestowed upon you. Distance healing or planetary healing becomes possible. As such, you can possibly heal another person even if they are ten thousand miles away from you. Furthermore, you will be able to improve your self-healing abilities as well as your spiritual and personal growth. You may be qualified to practice Reiki on others after the second degree of Reiki training
Reiki Masters
Third Degree Reiki
The Reiki level 3 is an attunement that enables the initiate to attune others for Reiki 1, 2 and 3 and this level is known as Reiki Masters. The Reiki level 4 requires that the initiate is competent at teaching Reiki and this level is known as Reiki Teacher. Usually the Reiki levels 3 and 4 are done together and people at this stage call themselves Reiki Master although some will call themselves Reiki Master/Teacher to reflect the distinction between levels 3 and 4
Third degree Reiki is only for the people who wish to further develop themselves into a Reiki Master. Here, they will have access to all the Reiki Master symbols and are allowed to perform the attunement process on others. More complex healing cycles will be taught at this level, with the aim of expanding your Reiki influence
The Reiki Master initiation is for those who have shown a commitment to their own spiritual development and that of others. My own Reiki Master told me that the Reiki Master degree changes lives permanently. Whereas there are those who may have the level 1 initiation and then may or may not practice it, this should not happen at Reiki Master. It is an affirmation that the initiate wishes to lead by example in the field of Reiki healing and it is an affirmation by the true Reiki Masters, in spirit, that you may become an ambassador of their great love. It is a step that is taken after careful consideration and with a deep sense of reverence for and commitment to the Reiki healing system
